Researchers\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0Digipesca\u00a0team\u00a0discuss the implementation of the blue economy in the Western Mediterranean<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On\u00a022\u00a0June, the UPV\u00a0Digipesca\u00a0research team participated in the\u00a0WestMED\u00a0Skateholder\u00a0Conference 2023, held in Malta.\u00a0It is an annual summit, sponsored by the European Commission, which\u00a0has been organizedsince 2017 with the aim of strengthening ties between the maritime projects developed in\u00a0the different countries belonging to the Western Mediterranean area,\u00a0and\u00a0in\u00a0some Atlantic countries\u00a0as well.\u00a0It brought together fiftyprofessionals\u00a0from\u00a0different\u00a0fields\u00a0\u2013\u00a0scientists, researchers\u00a0at\u00a0oceanographic institutes, businesspersons, diplomats, consultants,\u00a0government members, etc.\u00a0\u2013\u00a0representing the\u00a0WestMED\u00a0member countries\u00a0(France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia).<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the welcoming session, the first presentations addressed the progress achieved so far by the different states in relation to the priorities of\u00a0WestMED, with\u00a0an\u00a0emphasis on the blue economy and sustainability objectives. Then the\u00a0event\u00a0split\u00a0into\u00a0several\u00a0thematic sessions. Our colleague\u00a0Llu\u00eds\u00a0Miret,\u00a0a\u00a0researcher and professor at the\u00a0Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia\u00a0(UPV),\u00a0who,\u00a0together with Paloma Herrera,\u00a0leads the project ‘Digitalization and\u00a0valorization\u00a0of fisheries in the Spanish Mediterranean’, participated in session\u00a02,\u00a0on ‘Maritime\u00a0clusters’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These ‘Maritime\u00a0clusters’, based on the concept of the agglomeration economy, seek to generate specialized spaces in the blue economy, where the optimal conditions exist for the creation, consolidation and development of different industries linked to the marine environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Researcher Meritxell\u00a0Maimi\u00a0participated in session 4,\u00a0on the ‘Community\u00a0of practice on\u00a0marine spatial planning in the Mediterranean’.\u00a0The objective was,\u00a0in this case,\u00a0to identify aspects that\u00a0facilitate\u00a0marine spatial planning\u00a0(MSP),\u00a0i.e.,\u00a0mapping the Mediterranean\u00a0and\u00a0dividing\u00a0it\u00a0into different\u00a0economic use\u00a0zones. It\u00a0was concluded\u00a0that there is a problem of coordination between the Mediterranean countries, as each one has its own way of\u00a0doing\u00a0things. It is therefore\u00a0essential to generate a more continuous thread of approach and execution\u00a0that will help\u00a0participating countries coordinate better\u00a0in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In\u00a0the event\u2019s closing session,\u00a0five\u00a0awards, divided\u00a0into\u00a0four\u00a0categories,\u00a0were presented\u00a0to the best projects financed by the European Commission\u00a0and\u00a0aiming\u00a0to promote blue growth in the Mediterranean.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0the conference attendees voted which\u00a0one of the award-winning projects\u00a0they considered the best, and this\u00a0recognition went to the “We are\u00a0blue schools” project, coordinated by the SEA TEACH association,\u00a0and\u00a0based on the implementation of training sessions in schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digipesca\u00a0is\u00a0a project financed by the\u00a0Spanish\u00a0Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food through the\u00a0NextGenerationEU funds. It\u00a0works\u00a0with different universities and companies in Spain\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the\u00a0Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia,\u00a0the\u00a0Universidad de\u00a0Murcia, IMEDEA UIB CSIC,\u00a0the\u00a0Universitat de\u00a0Girona,\u00a0the\u00a0Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de\u00a0Catalunya,\u00a0the\u00a0Universidad de\u00a0C\u00e1diz and Blue Room Innovation\u00a0\u2013\u00a0in order\u00a0to promote the inclusion of the fishing sector in the blue growth line. We hope that our participation in the\u00a0WestMedConference in Malta can contribute to generate new alliances,and allow us to meet other successful projects, share our progress and move towards sustainable fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
